Chapelure

Cape Girardeau, MO

The Cape Girardeau cement plant was built in 1981 and employs over 180 professionals and skilled trade workers. The plant has the capacity to manufacture over 1,300,000 tons of cement annually. The majority of the produced cement is qualified as Type I/II cement which is used primarily in the construction industry for roads, highways, bridges, home and building foundations among other uses. The cement is shipped locally to ready-mix customers or via barge or railcar to customers stretching from Dallas, TX to Nashville, TN, from Memphis, TN to Kansas City, MO and several other locations in between. During the cement manufacturing process the plant utilizes alternative fuels, rather than tens of thousands of tons of ground coal, to support combustion within the pyro-process.

The Alternate Fuels Facility located adjacent to the cement plant, operates a Part B permitted RCRA Treatment, Storage and Disposal (TSD) facility to utilize RCRA and non-RCRA materials to replace coal. Since 1992, the facility has sustainably used waste materials such as off-spec chemicals, solvents, paints, tars, refinery waste, plastics, wood chips, fluff waste, and others as a partial fuel replacement in the kiln. Buzzi Unicem operates a fully operational on-site waste fuels laboratory, meeting regulatory and processing analytical requirements.
