Utilization of wastes for energy recovery in the cement manufacturing process is a proven technology that has been with Buzzi Unicem USA for decades. Cement manufacturing is a very energy intensive process requiring thousands of tons of coal, or other non-renewable resources to provide the heat necessary to make cement. The utilization of wastes as a supplemental fuel requires Buzzi Unicem USA to meet or exceed very stringent state and federal regulations that govern air emissions, waste analysis, transportation and storage, as well as worker safety. Wastes burned in a cement kiln can provide 50% or more of the fuel necessary to make cement. In addition to conserving a non-renewable natural resource, like coal, generating energy from waste materials also provides a reduction in cement manufacturing costs, an environmentally sound and effective way to utilize wastes, while reducing Buzzi Unicem USA’s carbon footprint.
